Welcome to my Blog!

My name is Faith Siplin and I’m a junior at Florida State University. I’m currently majoring in English with a concentration in editing, writing, and media. This blog will chronicle my journey to establish myself in the editing profession while continuing to learn more about our complex language.

My love for English, specifically the grammatical side of English, blossomed in one of my favorite classes during high school, which was also taught by my favorite teacher. During sophomore year I took English 2; the first half of our semester was focused on learning and using different copyediting symbols to edit writings. While other students groaned and reluctantly used the symbols to edit the various sentences and paragraphs that we were assigned, I found a sense of joy from the assignments. Correcting these passages came naturally to me and I thoroughly enjoyed the work. However, this wasn’t too much of a shock because I was that friend that would correct others’ text messages if they used improper grammar. I was also the person my friends would bring their papers to so that I could read over them before they turned them in to their teachers. Grammar and English were sort of my wheelhouses.

However, I realized that I didn’t just love English because I understood grammar and could easily fix passages of texts. I loved English because it is our form of communication. We use grammar and the English language every day in the most trivial and fundamental tasks that we carry out daily. When we give a stranger directions to a store, read road signs, write down a family recipe, pass notes in class, text, or tell our family members that we love them we rely on English and grammar. Our world revolves on messages being communicated effectively and precisely; without proper grammar and a mastery of the English language we could easily misconstrue our messages. Without English, our lives would be hectic. It is a complex and tricky language but it is also essential to life, and in my opinion very interesting.

Words mean a lot, and can have a major, lasting impact if they are used correctly. Speeches that have been eloquently pieced together are major staples in American history. Words spoken by activists, political leaders, and celebrities have been immortalized long after their speakers have been gone. Which is why I believe a mastery of the English language is so important, we should all strive to have a solid understanding of our language. I will not claim that I have perfect grammar all the time, but I will state once more that I love our language. I’m happy to share my experiences as I strengthen my English skills and pursue my career. Passion is an important quality when searching for a profession, which is why I decided to concentrate on my love for English in my first blog post. I look forward to discovering where my degree will take me and how my career will flourish.
